          Description

The Caspian Tern is the largest tern species in the world, easily recognized by its thick, bright red bill, black cap, and powerful build. Along California' beaches, estuaries, and inland lakes, it can be seen flying high above the water before plunging down to catch fish near the surface ùsometimes passing right over surfers waiting for a wave. Its deep, raspy calls often echo over the shore as it patrols for prey. Caspian Terns nest in colonies on sandy or gravelly islands and are known to defend their space aggressively.
